Basketball Game Preview: Vassar Vulcans vs. Marlette Red Raiders

Vassar and Marlette are an even 5-5 against one another since December of 2015, but not for long. The Vassar Vulcans will be playing in front of their home fans against the Marlette Red Raiders at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, both will really light up the scoreboard.

Marlette is hoping to do what Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy couldn't on Friday: put an end to Vassar's winning streak, which now stands at five games. Vassar really took it to Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy for the full four quarters, racking up a 64-36 victory. The Vulcans have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won three matches by 21 points or more this season.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Vassar to victory, but perhaps none more so than Austin Long, who went 7 of 15 on his way to 14 points in addition to six assists and five boards. Long is also crushing it when it comes to steals: he's grabbed at least two every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Bryce Brown, who almost dropped a double-double on 15 points and nine boards.

Vassar smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 14 offensive boards in three consecutive games.

Meanwhile, Marlette scored the most points they've had this season on Friday, but it wasn't enough. They took a 75-56 bruising from Millington. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game on Wednesday (55), the Red Raiders still had to take the loss.

Vassar's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 5-0. As for Marlette, they now have a losing record at 2-3.
