Baseball Game Preview: Metro-East Lutheran Knights vs. Greenville Comets

Metro-East Lutheran hasn't had much luck against Greenville recently, but that could start to change on Monday. Metro-East Lutheran will welcome Greenville at 4:30 p.m. The two teams are strolling into their games after big wins in their previous games.

Metro-East Lutheran took a loss when they played away from home on Friday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Saturday. They blew past Cahokia 22-3. That 19 run margin sets a new team best for the Knights this season.

Tim Schilbe was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (five). He was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring four runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. Those runs were his first of the season.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Gage Trendley, who went 3-for-5 with six RBI, two doubles, and one run. That's the most hits he has posted since back in March of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Matthew Barber, who scored two runs and stole four bases while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances.

Metro-East Lutheran was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .455. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .310 or higher in five consecutive matchups dating back to last season.

Meanwhile, Greenville put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their perfect season alive. Everything went their way against Pana as Greenville made off with a 15-5 win. That's two games straight that the Comets have won by exactly ten runs.

Metro-East Lutheran pushed their record up to 3-1 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Greenville, their victory bumped their record up to 3-0.

Metro-East Lutheran couldn't quite get it done against Greenville in their previous matchup back in March of 2023 as they fell 9-6. Can Metro-East Lutheran avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
