Basketball Recap: Shiprock Takes a Loss

Shiprock played a tough matchup on Saturday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They lost 70-45 to the Pojoaque Valley Elks/Elkettes. While losing is never fun, the Chieftains can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' New Mexico basketball rankings (they are ranked 128th, while the Elks/Elkettes are ranked 26th).

When it comes to explaining why Shiprock lost, don't look at Dieon Harvey. Despite the final result, he posted 23 points. That was a full 51.1% of Shiprock's points, marking the fourth time in a row he's scored more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Kaden Lapahie, who put up 11 points.

Shiprock's defeat was their fifth straight at home, which dropped their record down to 2-11. As for Pojoaque Valley, their win bumped their record up to 11-4.

Shiprock didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, an 83-48 loss against Taos on the 16th. As for Pojoaque Valley, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, an 86-53 victory against Miyamura on the 14th.
