Softball Recap: Oberlin Phoenix vs. Wellington Dukes

Oberlin extended their losing streak to ten on Wednesday, dropping their season record down to 1-11-1 in the process. They lost 15-7 to the Wellington Dukes. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Dukes this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 14-4 last Monday.

As for Wellington, their victory ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 7-8. The result was nothing new for the Dukes, who have now won seven matchups by six runs or more so far this season.

For Wellington's part, Mallory Pickering was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She struck out 16 batters over 5.2 innings while giving up three earned runs off three hits. That's the most strikeouts Pickering has posted since back in April. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-5 with three runs and one double.

In other batting news, Caedyn Wacker and Madison Minutello did most of the damage at the plate: Wacker got on base in all five of her plate appearances with three stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI, while Minutello got on base in all five of her plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. That's the most runs Wacker has posted since back in April. Avery Senghas was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

Oberlin and Wellington could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Ohio Rankings. The Phoenix (ranked 709th) will meet Black River (ranked 335th) at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, Wellington will face off against Keystone at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday with a big rank disadvantage (530 vs. 248).
