Baseball Game Preview: Atkinson County Rebels vs. Lanier County Bulldogs

Atkinson County hasn't had much luck against Lanier County recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Atkinson County Rebels will be playing in front of their home fans against the Lanier County Bulldogs at 6:00 p.m. Atkinson County knows how to get runs on the board -- the team has finished with ten runs or more in their past four games -- so hopefully Lanier County likes a good challenge.

On Friday, everything went Atkinson County's way against Brooks County as Atkinson County made off with an 18-2 win. The Rebels haven't had any issues with the Trojans recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive victory against them.

Gevin Smith and Caleb Spivey made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Smith struck out six batters over 3.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits. Meanwhile, Spivey pitched 1.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He is becoming a predictor of Atkinson County's success: when he allows at most one hit the team is undefeated (and 4-8 when he doesn't). At bat, Smith scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances, while Spivey scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Those three runs gave Spivey a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on LaDarien Roberts, who scored three runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in RBI (two). Jack Tillman was another key player, scoring two runs.

Meanwhile, Lanier County never let their opponents score on Friday. They came out on top against Irwin County by a score of 3-0.

Lanier County has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-4 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.5 runs over those games. Atkinson County's win bumped their record up to 7-8.

Atkinson County might still be hurting after the 15-2 loss they got from Lanier County in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can Atkinson County avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
