Basketball Recap: Jaxson Vasicek's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Columbus over Grand Island

Columbus lost a heartbreaker to Grand Island when they met back in February of 2024, and they left with a heavy heart again on Thursday. The Columbus Discoverers fell 54-47 to the Grand Island Islanders. The loss continues a trend for the Discoverers in their matchups with the Islanders: they've now lost five in a row.

Columbus' defeat came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jaxson Vasicek, who posted 14 points and eight boards. Another player making a difference was Gavin Anderson, who scored nine points.

Even though they lost, Columbus smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in nine consecutive contests.

Victor Fisher Jr. was his usual excellent self, dropping a double-double with 25 points and 12 rebounds for Grand Island. Ethan Coslor was another key player, putting up ten points and five assists.

Columbus' record now sits at 5-17. As for Grand Island, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 10-11 record this season.

Columbus has already played their next game, an 84-51 win against Bryan on the 21st. As for Grand Island, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 55-42 victory against Elkhorn South on the 21st.
