Softball Game Preview: South Johnston Trojans vs. Smithfield-Selma Spartans

South Johnston has gone a perfect 10-0 against Smithfield-Selma recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Tuesday. The South Johnston Trojans will be playing in front of their home fans against the Smithfield-Selma Spartans at 6:00 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.

Last Friday, South Johnston got the win against Garner by a conclusive 16-4. The win made it back-to-back victories for South Johnston.

Reese Penny was incredible, firing off two home runs, four runs, and four RBI while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. That's the most home runs she has posted since back in April of 2024. Lannah Price was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing Two bases. while going 3-for-3.

Penny wasn't the only one working in the home run department: South Johnston lost a few balls and finished the game with three home runs. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Garner didn't launched any home runs.

Meanwhile, Smithfield-Selma was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their 16th straight loss dating back to last season. They lost 57-42 to Southeast Raleigh. One positive for the Spartans, at least, is that this was the most points they've scored all season.

Smithfield-Selma's defeat dropped their record down to 0-4. As for South Johnston, they now have a winning record of 2-1.

South Johnston took their victory against Smithfield-Selma in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 17-0. Will South Johnston repeat their success, or does Smithfield-Selma have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
