Softball Recap: Watertown Drops Season-High Score on Sycamore

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Watertown). Everything went their way against the Sycamore War Eagles on Thursday as Watertown made off with a 15-1 win. The team's explosion at the plate also rewarded the Purple Tigers with their most commanding win of the season.

Kayla McGuire was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out six over four innings pitched. That's the fewest hits she has allowed since back in May of 2024. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one home run, five RBI, and one triple. Those five RBI gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Alyssa Wood, who scored three runs while going 3-for-4. What's more, she posted two RBI, the most she's had since back in May of 2024. Zoey Thomas was another key player, scoring three runs while going 2-for-3.

Watertown kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in three consecutive contests.

Watertown is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 4-5 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.0 runs over those games. Sycamore's loss dropped their record down to 1-1.

Coming up, Watertown will host Jackson County at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Watertown is facing Jackson County at the right time seeing as Jackson County is stuck on a six-game losing streak. As for Sycamore, they didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, a 13-4 defeat against Rock Island on the 27th.
