Basketball Recap: Cheraw Takes a Loss

On Friday, the Cheraw Wolverines came up short against the Genoa-Hugo/Karval Pirates and fell 35-27. While the Wolverines didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Pirates 10-4 in the first quarter.

When it comes to explaining why Cheraw lost, don't look at Adi Miell. Despite the final result, she posted 12 points and five boards. Miell is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in each of the last 14 games she's played dating back to last season.

Even though they lost, Cheraw smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 14 offensive boards in three consecutive matchups.

Genoa-Hugo/Karval's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jayli Lockhart, who went 5-for-7 en route to 13 points and three steals. What's more, Lockhart also posted a 71% shooting accuracy, which is the highest she's achieved since back in January of 2024. Another player making a difference was Rylee Corn, who dropped a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Cheraw's loss dropped their record down to 13-8. As for Genoa-Hugo/Karval, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight games. That's provided a massive bump to their 12-11 record this season.

Cheraw wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 50-23 win against Walsh on the 1st. As for Genoa-Hugo/Karval, they will challenge Nucla at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Nucla's defense has only allowed 25.2 points per game this season, so Genoa-Hugo/Karval's offense will have their work cut out for them.
