Baseball Recap: Bishop Montgomery Find Success

It may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Bishop Montgomery ultimately got the result they hoped for on Friday. They won by a run and slipped past the Cathedral Phantoms 3-2. This was a revenge game for the Knights: when they faced off against the Phantoms last Tuesday, they had to take a 5-0 defeat.

Pierson Howe spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered two runs (both of which were unearned) on one hit and racked up 13 Ks. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Bishop Montgomery is 3-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 6-7 otherwise.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Noah Gomez, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. He is becoming a predictor of Bishop Montgomery's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 5-8 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Dominic Robley, who went 3-for-4 with one double and one RBI.

Bishop Montgomery now has a winning record of 9-8. As for Cathedral, their loss dropped their record down to 9-4.

Bishop Montgomery and Cathedral should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps California Rankings. The Knights will challenge St. Monica at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday with a big rank advantage (354 vs. 804). Meanwhile, Cathedral (ranked 171st) will meet St. Anthony (ranked 474th) at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
