Softball Recap: Athens Wins Going Away Against Wellsboro

Athens had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the six-run drubbing they dealt Wellsboro on Tuesday. Athens blew past Wellsboro 10-4. The victory continues a trend for the Wildcats in their matchups with the Hornets: they've now won three in a row.

Maddie Hiley made a splash no matter where she played. She struck out 12 batters over seven innings while giving up four earned runs off seven hits. Those 12 strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 3-for-4.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Gretchan Hiley, who got on base in four of her six plate appearances with four runs and one triple. Another player making a difference was Memphis Paul, who got on base in three of her five plate appearances with one stolen base and two RBI.

Athens' win bumped their record up to 3-0. As for Wellsboro, they are on a seven-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-3.
