Softball Recap: Athens Comes Up Short

Athens had lost four straight at home, but on Monday they dropped their record down to 8-10 to make it five. They came up short against the Springfield Senators, falling 10-0. Having soared to a lofty 15 runs in the game before, the Warriors' shutout was a dramatic turnaround.

As for Springfield, their victory bumped their record up to 12-3. They haven't had any issues with Athens recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive win against them.

For Springfield's part, Mia Volpert made a splash while hitting and pitching. She kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 13 over five innings pitched. Volpert has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

In other batting news, Bella Pagliara was incredible, going 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Erin Stoops, who went 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBI.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Athens will welcome Jacksonville at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Springfield, they will face off against Warrensburg-Latham at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
