Basketball Recap: Grace Mahony's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Riverside over Central Valley

Riverside played a tough game on Monday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They came up short against the Central Valley Cougars, falling 45-24. The Chargers were down 42-19 at the end of the third quarter, which was just too much to recover from.

Several Chargers players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Grace Mahony, who posted five points along with nine steals and six boards. Mahony is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed five or more in the last five games she's played. Amelia Baldwin also deserves some recognition as she grabbed her first steal of the season.

Central Valley found their leader in freshman Bentleigh Dugan, who went 8 of 12 en route to 23 points in addition to five rebounds and four steals. Dugan continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last four games she's played. Annaka Wood was another key player, putting up nine points along with six steals and five boards.

This is the second loss in a row for Riverside and nudges their season record down to 3-14. As for Central Valley, their victory ended a five-game drought on the road and puts them at 4-14.

Riverside will square off against Palmer at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Central Valley, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 47-36 loss against Elgin/Pope John on the 28th.
