Softball Recap: Newark Catholic Green Wave vs. Johnstown-Monroe Johnnies

Newark Catholic had lost five straight on the road, but on Friday they dropped their record down to 6-12 to make it six. They took a 6-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Johnstown-Monroe Johnnies. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Johnnies this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 2-0 back in April.

Newark Catholic saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Brooklyn Kurtz Merricks (2027), who went 1-for-3 with one run and one double.

As for Johnstown-Monroe, they have been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-8 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.5 runs on average over those games.

On Johnstown-Monroe's side, they let Abigail Wood and Jenna Hochanadel run wild. Wood went 2-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and one RBI, while Hochanadel went a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. Those two doubles gave Wood a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Addy Zak, who went 1-for-2 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

Coming up, Newark Catholic will host Utica at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Johnstown-Monroe, they will head out on the road to face off against Big Walnut at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
