Montgomery hasn't had much luck against Sweetwater recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. The Aztecs will take on the Red Devils at 3:30 p.m. Montgomery is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.3 runs per game this season.
Montgomery gave up the first runs last Thursday, but they didn't let that get them down. They walked away with an 11-7 victory over San Ysidro. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Aztecs.
Brianna Torres was a standout: she went 2-for-5 with three runs, one triple, and one double. Another player making a difference was Jordyn Coleman, who went 2-for-5 with one home run and one double.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Montgomery kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. They are 9-2 when they post 11 or more hits.
Meanwhile, Sweetwater had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 15.7 runs) and they went ahead and made it four on Tuesday. They came out on top against the Cougars by a score of 9-6.
Tatyana Mosqueda spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and three unearned) runs on nine hits and racked up seven Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 14 consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Sweetwater let Audrey Murillo and Gabriella Sena run wild. Murillo went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI, while Sena went 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double. That's the most hits Murillo has posted since back in March of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Valeria Rodriguez, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs.
Montgomery's record is now 13-9. As for Sweetwater, their record now sits at 15-2-1.
Thursday's match might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Montgomery has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .466. However, it's not like Sweetwater struggles in that department as they've averaged .546. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Montgomery suffered a grim 22-5 defeat to Sweetwater when the teams last played two weeks ago. Can the Aztecs avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
