Volleyball Recap: Nixon Mustangs vs. Weslaco Panthers
Nixon kicked off their season on the road on Tuesday and hit a couple of potholes. They came up short against the Weslaco Panthers, falling 3-0. The Mustangs were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Panthers apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in August of 2024.
While Nixon had to settle for second, they sure made a game of it, scoring at least 19 points in every set they played. The final score came out to 25-19, 25-23, 25-23.
Hilda Quintana paced Nixon's offense, picking up 13 kills. Quintana got some help from Alayna Martinez and her 11 assists. Samantha Ibarra and Kylie Vega kept things locked in from the service line: the pair finished with two aces apiece.
Weslaco's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Sati Alonzo, who had five digs and five aces. That's the most aces Alonzo has posted since back in September of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Desiree Gonzalez, who had 14 digs and two aces.
Looking ahead, Nixon is taking a road trip to face off against Mission at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. This will be the Mustangs' first chance to prove their worth in the conference. As for Weslaco, they will take on Rowe in a tournament on Thursday.
