Basketball Recap: West Elk Takes a Loss

After flying high against Caldwell last Friday, West Elk came back down to earth. The West Elk Patriots fell to the Flinthills Mustangs 55-51. While the Patriots didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Mustangs 11-7 in the first quarter.

When it comes to explaining why West Elk lost on Tuesday, don't look at Maddex Moreno. Despite the final result, he posted 17 points along with seven rebounds and five assists. Moreno has been hot, having also posted two or more steals the last six times he's played. Another player making a difference was Peyton Fechter, who had six points and three steals.

Jacob Hunter was his usual excellent self, going 9-for-15 on his way to 25 points for Flinthills. That makes it 12 consecutive games in which Hunter has scored at least a third of Flinthills' points. Charles Farris was another key player, putting up six points.

West Elk's defeat was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 6-1 and their overall record down to 10-7. As for Flinthills, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matches, which provided a nice bump to their 10-7 record this season.

West Elk wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 54-40 loss against Burlingame on the 13th. As for Flinthills, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 56-45 win against Caldwell on the 14th.
