Baseball Recap: Winnisquam Puts Losing Streak Behind Them

The scorekeeper got an easy start on Thursday as neither Winnisquam nor Newfound Regional made it on the board until the fifth inning. Winnisquam narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Newfound Regional 2-1. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last six times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.

John Shea spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on four hits and racked up nine Ks. He is becoming a predictor of Winnisquam's success: when he posts at least eight strikeouts the team is 3-1 (and 3-11 when he doesn't).

At the plate, Winnisquam secured the win behind a pair of hitters. One of them was Justin Tardif, who went 1-for-3 with one RBI. Another was Ben Wood, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with two runs.

With the victory, Winnisquam broke their four-game losing streak and moved their record to 6-12. As for Newfound Regional, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 6-11.

Looking ahead, Winnisquam will head out on the road to square off against Inter-Lakes at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The Bears are facing the Lakers at the right time seeing as the Lakers are stuck on a seven-game losing streak. Newfound Regional does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
