Recap: Manitou Springs Mustangs vs. St. Mary's Pirates
The Manitou Springs Mustangs struggled with assists on Wednesday (the St. Mary's Pirates had nine more) and sadly the final score reflected it. Manitou Springs took a 56-38 bruising from St. Mary's. Manitou Springs has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Manitou Springs' defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Brooklynn Sheffield, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 12 rebounds. Sheffield is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Cassidy Blechman, who scored six points along with nine rebounds and three steals.
St. Mary's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Jaela Pedro, who scored 13 points along with four blocks and three steals. Another player making a difference was Maeve Salveson, who scored 16 points along with six steals.
Manitou Springs has not been sharp recently, as they've lost three of their last four matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-7 record this season. As for St. Mary's, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 7-1.
Manitou Springs will head out on the road to take on Ellicott at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. As for St. Mary's, they will be playing in front of their home fans against James Irwin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. James Irwin will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Colorado Rankings (they are ranked 307th, while St. Mary's is ranked 56th).
