Softball Recap: Brighton Comes Up Short

The home team had won the previous three meetings between Brighton and Alta, and Alta kept the tradition alive. The Bengals fell just short of the Hawks by a score of 13-12 on Monday. Even though they lost, the Bengals' still made a splash at the plate and bumped their average scoring up to 6.3 runs per game (they're now ranked -1th in scoring overall).

Alison Nikolaus was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. She pitched 6.1 innings while giving up three earned (and ten unearned) runs off nine hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring three runs and stealing two bases while going 2-for-5.

In other batting news, Brighton got a massive performance out of Olivia Issowits, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-5. Kate Gunn was another key player, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with two stolen bases, one triple, and two RBI.

Brighton has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost four of their last five matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-8 record this season. That patch can't be blamed on the team's hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.4 runs over those games. As for Alta, with the win, they broke their four-game losing streak and moved their record to 3-9.

We've got plenty of inter-region action coming up soon. Brighton will square off against rival Skyline at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Alta is set to challenge their familiar foe Olympus at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
