Baseball Recap: Mogollon Starts off Right with Win over Maryvale Prep

Mogollon had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Maryvale Prep Matador a 22-0 shutout on Tuesday.

Chancy Worsley and Cort Porter made a big impact no matter where they played. On the mound, Worsley struck out six batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk). Meanwhile, Porter struck out six batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). Those six strikeouts gave him a new career-high. At the plate, Worsley got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three runs, three RBI, and one triple, while Porter went a perfect 4-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and one triple.

In other batting news, Hadley Porter and Rocky Porter did most of the damage at the plate: Hadley went 3-for-4 with three runs, one triple, and two RBI, while Rocky scored three runs and stole Two bases. while going 2-for-5. That's the most runs Rocky has posted since back in April of 2024. Yoyo Suarez was another key player, scoring two runs while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances.

Mogollon always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .590. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Maryvale Prep only posted an OBP of .143.

Maryvale Prep is on a six-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-2.

Looking ahead, Mogollon is taking a road trip to take on St. Johns at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday. Maryvale Prep will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Anthem Prep at 4:00 p.m. on March 20th.
