Softball Recap: Tolono Unity Comes Up Short

Tolono Unity had lost three straight on the road, but on Tuesday they dropped down to 7-7 to make it four. They fell just short of the Champaign Central Maroons by a score of 2-1. That's two games in a row now that the Rockets have lost by just one run.

As for Champaign Central, they are on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 12 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-3-1 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.1 runs on average over those games.

For Champaign Central's part, Haley Helm spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on five hits and racked up 11 Ks. Helm has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Coryn Christ, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI and one double. That's the most hits she has posted over her last 11 contests.

Looking ahead, Tolono Unity will be playing at home against Paxton-Buckley-Loda at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Champaign Central, they will challenge Charleston at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Maroons will need to watch out since the Trojans have now posted at least ten runs in their last five matchups.
