Basketball Recap: Bayfield Wolverines vs. Montezuma-Cortez Panthers
If Bayfield was feeling good fresh off their 36-13 takedown of Telluride last Saturday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Bayfield Wolverines were beaten by the Montezuma-Cortez Panthers 59-26 on Friday. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Panthers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 53-41 back in February.
Despite the loss, Bayfield still got an impressive performance from Renae Foutz, who dropped a double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds. What's more, Foutz posted four blocks, the most she's had since back in December of 2024.
Taylor Whited had a dynamite game for Montezuma-Cortez, almost dropping a double-double with 32 points and nine steals. Whited is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in each of the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Shaylynn Bia, who had five points along with seven boards and three steals.
Bayfield has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost seven of their last eight contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-16 record this season. Montezuma-Cortez's win ended a seven-game drought on the road and puts them at 7-16.
Bayfield wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 57-26 defeat against Pagosa Springs on the 1st. As for Montezuma-Cortez, they will take on Timnath at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Timnath has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
