Assumption High School volleyball team nationally ranked on the 2018-19 TOC.
The 14th Annual MaxPreps Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard passed through Kentucky on Monday, January 28 to recognize
Assumption (Louisville, Ky.) High School and its girls volleyball team for winning a state championship and earning a high national ranking.
Having upended Mercy 25-17, 22-25, 25-15, 25-13 in the
KHSAA state volleyball championships, the 43-0 Rockets claimed their 21st state championship win in 27 seasons, earned the No. 2 ranking in
MaxPreps' National Rankings and claimed the national title in
MaxPreps' Xcellent 25 Writers' Poll!
MaxPreps and the Kentucky Army National Guard were on hand to celebrate Assumption volleyball and present the Rockets with the Army National Guard national ranking trophy at a school assembly in the school's gymnasium. Once the Tour of Champions set up was complete, 900 students from the all female student body filled the gymnasium.
The Rockets, meanwhile, took their place on a makeshift stage as the highlights of their championship season rolled on the big screen. Assumption president Mary Lang greeted the students, their parents and Rocket Nation before announcing that MaxPreps representative Todd Townsend and Sergeant Breanna Hopkins and Sergeant Jennifer Ewanchew, both of the Kentucky Army National Guard, were on hand to make a special presentation to the Rockets. Townsend kicked off the rest of the celebration by explaining the Tour of Champions to a rowdy crowd that cheered wholeheartedly when they were informed that Assumption was ranked No. 1 in the entire nation!
SGT Hopkins congratulated the Rockets and spoke briefly about loyalty, dedication and hard work, all shared character traits of the Army National Guard and a state championship volleyball team. SGT Hopkins and SGT Ewanchew then presented head coach Ron Kordes and the Rockets with the Army National Guard national ranking trophy, a nationally ranked rafter banner and commemorative Tour of Champions t-shirts. As the presentation concluded, Kordes and the Rockets took photos with the trophy and conducted interviews with the local media. Congratulations to Coach Kordes and the Rockets on a great season and the highest of all national ranking!
