Basketball Recap: Derrick Cavalier's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Northeast over Southern Lab

Northeast suffered their biggest loss since December 26, 2024 on Friday. They lost 72-47 to the Southern Lab Kittens. While losing is never fun, the Vikings can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Louisiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 282nd, while the Kittens are ranked 29th).

Several Vikings players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Derrick Cavalier, who went 7 of 16 en route to 23 points in addition to six boards and three blocks. Cavalier is on a roll when it comes to blocks, as he's now posted two or more in the last three games he's played. Braylon Guerin was another key player, going 6 for 15 on his way to 14 points along with eight rebounds and three steals.

Even though they lost, Northeast smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in 15 consecutive matchups.

Northeast now has a losing record at 12-13. As for Southern Lab, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six games, which provided a nice bump to their 24-6 record this season.

Northeast wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 59-17 win against Jehovah-Jireh on the 10th. Southern Lab has also already played their next matchup (against Destrehan), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
