Volleyball Recap: Sturgis West Comes Up Short

After flying high against Rising Tide on Friday, Sturgis West came back down to earth. The Navigators fell 3-1 to the Monomoy Sharks on Monday. The Navigators were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Sharks earlier this season, when they won 3-2.

Sturgis West was was forced to take the loss, but they sure made Monomoy work for it, especially in the third set. The match finished with set scores of 25-17, 18-25, 26-24, 25-23.

Noelani Kittila paced Sturgis West's offense, picking up 13 kills. Kittila got some help from Sage Hampton and her 24 assists. Kittila was also solid from the service line: she led the team with four aces.

Monomoy's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Ella Cutter led the charge by getting 23 assists. Another player making a difference was Rory Shortis, who had eight kills and two blocks.

Sturgis West has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-8 record this season. As for Monomoy, they moved to 3-7 with that win, which also ended their three-match losing streak.

Sturgis West didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 3-0 victory against Nantucket on the 8th. Monomoy has also already played their next matchup (against Rising Tide), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
