Softball Recap: Madison Has No Trouble Against Lake Catholic

Madison won the last time they faced Lake Catholic and things went their way on Friday too. The Blue Streaks were the clear victors by an 18-1 margin over the Cougars. Considering the Blue Streaks have won seven matchups by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

Kara Mekulsia was a major factor no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out 14 over six innings pitched. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, going 5-for-6 with four runs, two stolen bases, and one triple. Those five hits gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Tori Semple and Gianna LaMarco did most of the damage at the plate: Semple got on base in all five of her plate appearances with one home run, four RBI, and two runs, while LaMarco went 2-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. That's the most RBI LaMarco has posted since back in April. Another player making a difference was Ally Negin, who got on base in three of her five plate appearances with one home run and two runs.

Madison always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .565. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Lake Catholic only posted an OBP of .167.

Madison pushed their record up to 12-4 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 15.7 runs over those games. As for Lake Catholic, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost six of their last seven contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-9 record this season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Madison will take on Elyria Catholic at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. The Panthers will roll in looking for their 21st straight victory, something the Blue Streaks surely won't give up without a fight. As for Lake Catholic, they will face off against Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The Cougars' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Royals have averaged an impressive 6.2 runs per game this season.
