Basketball Recap: La Cueva Falls Short Against Ranked Sandia

On Friday, La Cueva faced Sandia in a battle between two of the state's top teams. The La Cueva Bears fell just short of the Sandia Matadors by a score of 67-64. The Bears were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Matadors earlier this season, when they won 80-74.

Sandia found their leader in freshman Gad Harris, who made all 9 shots he took for 31 points and eight assists. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Harris has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Mason Howell, who posted four points along with 12 boards and four steals.

La Cueva's defeat dropped their record down to 13-9. As for Sandia, they are on a roll lately: they've won 14 of their last 16 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 19-3 record this season.

Looking ahead, La Cueva will take on Eldorado at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. One thing working in Eldorado's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last six games. As for Sandia, they will face off against Capital at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Sandia knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past 22 contests -- so hopefully Capital likes a good challenge.
