Maxwell pitcher ties state record; Tyler Wells also throws no-hitter in doubleheader sweep of Chester.

Steven Perry of Maxwell (Maxwell, Calif.) tied a state record with his fourth no-hitter in a row Friday in an 18-0 win over Chester. Not to be outdone, teammate Tyler Wells threw a no-hitter, too, to give the Panthers the doubleheader sweep.

According to the Cal-Hi Sports Record Book, Perry's no-hitter tied the state record set by Byron Randolph of Winters in 1963 and tied last year by John Kukuruda of East Nicolaus. The Panther senior faced just 16 batters in the five-inning contest, striking out 13 and walking one. There were no errors.

Perry (7-0) has not allowed a run to score this year and he has only given up two hits in 31 innings pitched. He has thrown five consecutive shutouts and has a scoreless inning streak of 34 in a row dating back to last year's playoff win over Chester.

Opposing batters are hitting just .021 off of Perry and he has struck out 74 batters in 31 innings with only five walks.

While Perry has four no-hitters this year, he is barely the team leader after Wells threw his third no-hitter of the year (non-consecutive) in the first game of the doubleheader with Chester, an 11-0 win. Wells faced 17 batters and struck out 12 with one walk. Only two Volcanoes reached base with the other runner reaching first on a dropped third strike.

The victory gave Wells a 6-0 record and was his fourth shutout of the season. He also has won 29 straight games since his freshman season. Wells has three straight shutouts, has not given up an earned run this year and has struck out 62 batters in 30 innings with only seven walks.

The back-to-back no-hitters marks the second time this season that Perry and Wells have thrown no-hitters as part of a doubleheader. The duo did the same thing against Hayfork on April 1.

Both Wells and Perry added to their career batting totals as well. Perry added five runs scored in the two games and climbed to 185 for his career. His career basehit total also rose to 173. Wells, meanwhile, added a double, giving him 53 for his career. He also added six RBI, giving him 184 for his career.
