Basketball Game Preview: Monticello Mustangs vs. Western Albemarle Warriors

Monticello hasn't had much luck against Western Albemarle recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Monticello Mustangs will head out on the road to square off against the Western Albemarle Warriors at 7:30 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: both posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.

Monticello is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They breezed by Louisa County to the tune of 66-37 on Tuesday. Given the Mustangs' advantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 154th, while the Lions are ranked 347th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Meanwhile, Western Albemarle waltzed into their matchup on Tuesday with four straight wins... but they left with five. They blew past the Fighting Hornets 65-35. The Warriors have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won nine games by 24 points or more this season.

Western Albemarle is also on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine contests, which provided a nice bump to their 16-4 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 64.0 points per game. As for Monticello, they now have a winning record of 11-10.

Monticello came up short against Western Albemarle in their previous matchup on Saturday, falling 56-44. Can Monticello avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
