Basketball Recap: Chula Vista Piles Up the Points Against Hilltop

Chula Vista won the last time they faced Hilltop and things went their way on Friday too. The Chula Vista Spartans breezed by the Hilltop Lancers to the tune of 68-41. The Spartans have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won eight games by 23 points or more this season.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Chula Vista to victory, but perhaps none more so than Elijah Gillespie, who posted 22 points. The contest was Gillespie's third in a row with at least 22 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Giovanni Contreras, who had 22 points.

Despite the defeat, Hilltop saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Adrian Alvarez went 5 for 7 on his way to 12 points and four steals. With that strong performance, Alvarez is now averaging an impressive 2 steals per game. Another player making a difference was Bryson Grant, who earned four points and three steals.

Chula Vista has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 19-6 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 62.1 points over those games. As for Hilltop, their loss was their fifth straight at home, which dropped their record down to 8-16.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Chula Vista will square off against Sweetwater at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Hilltop, they will take on Castle Park at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Hilltop is facing Castle Park at the right time seeing as Castle Park is stuck on a three-game losing streak.
