Football Recap: St. Paul Takes a Loss

St. Paul fought the good fight in their overtime game against Paraclete on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They were just a hair shy of victory and fell 43-42 to the Spirits. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game last Friday (41), the Swordsmen still had to take the loss.

St. Paul's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Gabriel Castaneda, who threw for 290 yards and four TDs while completing 81.8% of his passes. Gavin Lannon was in the mix as well, providing the Swordsmen with two scores.

Joseph Mesa produced another solid effort throwing for 206 yards and four touchdowns, while also rushing for 82 yards and one TD for Paraclete. Those 82 rushing yards gave Mesa a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Kyle Fulton Jr, who rushed for 138 yards and one score.

St. Paul moved to 3-7 with that defeat, which also ended their three-game winning streak. As for Paraclete, their victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 8-2.

The two teams are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. St. Paul will square off against Etiwanda at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Paraclete, they will take on Woodrow Wilson at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Bruins' defense has only allowed 13.7 points per game this season, so the Spirits' offense will have their work cut out for them.
