Softball Recap: Highland Comes Up Short

Highland had lost three straight at home, but on Thursday they dropped their record down to 8-6 to make it four. They came up short against the Lowell Red Devils, falling 12-1. Having soared to a lofty 17 runs in the game before, the Trojans couldn't push the score so high this time.

Highland saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Hailey Thomas, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one run.

As for Lowell, the victory was the seventh in a row for them, bringing their record up to 9-4. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.9 runs on average over those games.

On Lowell's side, Olivia Fuentes spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on three hits and racked up 15 Ks. Fuentes has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in ten consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Preslee Hill was incredible, firing off two home runs, five RBI, and three runs while going 3-for-4. Those two home runs gave her a new career-high. Layla Baron was another key player, going 1-for-2 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Highland will host Hammond Bishop Noll at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Trojans' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Warriors have averaged an impressive 11.3 runs per game this season. As for Lowell, they will look to defend their home field on Monday against Lake Central at 4:30 p.m.
