Football Recap: Josepablo Gutierrez's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Whittier Christian over Big Bear

If Whittier Christian was riding high fresh off their 38-7 takedown of Riverside Prep last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Heralds took a 33-27 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Big Bear Bears on Friday. The Heralds lost against the Bears in their previous head to head back in September of 2024, too, but the margin this time around was much closer than the 76-35 score last time.

Several Heralds players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Josepablo Gutierrez, who picked up 156 receiving yards and three scores. Gutierrez's longest reception was for an incredible 79 yards. The team also got some help courtesy of Tuff Kovacs, who gained 184 total yards.

Whittier Christian dropped their record down to 1-5 with the defeat, which was their sixth straight on the road dating back to last season. As for Big Bear, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 4-2 record this season.

Whittier Christian has already played their next game, a 7-6 victory against Arrowhead Christian on the 3rd. As for Big Bear, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next matchup, a 40-15 loss against Western Christian on the 2nd.
