Softball Preview: Fairfield Falcons vs. Garrett Railroaders
The Fairfield Falcons have the luxury of staying home for another game and will welcome the Garrett Railroaders at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Fairfield is strutting in with some hitting muscle, as they've averaged 8.1 runs per game this season.
In what's become a running theme this season, Fairfield gave their fans yet another huge win on Saturday. They blew past Goshen 13-1. The victory was just what Fairfield needed coming off of a 12-2 loss in their prior matchup.
Jayslynn Hall and Preslee Caouette did most of the damage at the plate: Hall scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-2, while Caouette scored a run while going 2-for-2. Another player making a difference was Madison Jones, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-3.
Meanwhile, Garrett fell victim to Churubusco and their airtight pitching crew on Monday. Their tough 9-0 defeat to the Eagles might stick with them for a while. Having soared to a lofty 16 runs in the game before, Garrett's shutout was a dramatic turnaround.
Garrett also got a good showing from Remi Winebrenner, who tossed three innings while giving up no earned run off one hit (she also only allowed one walk).
On the hitting side, Garrett saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Sarah DePew, who went 1-for-3 with a stolen base. DePew has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times she's played.
Fairfield now has a winning record of 5-4. As for Garrett, their loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 3-4.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Fairfield has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.1 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Garrett struggles in that department as they've been averaging 4.1. The only question left is which team can snag more.
