League recap: Williams breaks off league-leading run for Hayesville

1A Conference 1 recap November 5, 2013

Hayesville's Dayrion Williams rumbled for the longest rushing play in 1A Conference 1 this season in his game against Murphy last week. Williams scampered for 80 yards on the play and finished with 88 on the day as his team lost to the Bulldogs.

Murphy extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Hayesville, 55-13. The victory was the eighth in a row for the team.

Ray Smith threw for 140 yards and 4 touchdowns. He went 6-8 with 0 interceptions.

Chase Hardin was the best wideout in the league this week as Andrews defeated Cherokee. Hardin racked up 1 reception for 60 yards. Logan Allen helped Andrews' passing attack out by catching 2 balls for 19 yards.

Swain County's Smith and Jordan Cody led 1A Conference 1 in both passing and receiving yards. Smith has thrown for 1,216 yards this season, while Cody, a 6-foot-0 receiver, has 27 catches for 502 yards. The Wildcats' Colin Gillespie leads the league in rushing yards with 1,114.

One of the league's premier quarterbacks will face off with its top pass rusher when the Maroon Devils and the Bulldogs face off next week.

An important game coming up in the league this week will be when Swain County takes on Murphy. Neil Blankenship's team is currently in first, while the Bulldogs are in third.

There should be lots of points scored when the Maroon Devils and Murphy face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, Swain County comes in having scored 345 this season, while the Bulldogs have scored 337. The Maroon Devils scored 56 points last week as they bested Rosman.

Robbinsville and Q Foundation Academy played the closest game in the league this week, with Robbinsville eventually emerging with a 45-40 victory.
