Basketball Recap: Fernandina Beach Comes Up Short

After flying high against Yulee on Friday, Fernandina Beach came back down to earth. The Fernandina Beach Pirates were just a bucket shy of victory on Saturday and fell 37-36 to the Baker County Wildcats. Sadly, that's the second time they've come up short against the Pirates this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 33-23 back in December of 2024.

Fernandina Beach's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Amelia Winn, who went 5 for 9 on her way to 10 points and seven boards, and Savina Wells, who posted seven points along with eight rebounds and four blocks. Wells is crushing it when it comes to boards: she's pulled down at least eight every time she's taken the court this season.

Baker County's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Yamise Haygood, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 12 rebounds. Another player making a difference was Lainey O'Steen, who put up ten points in addition to five boards and four steals.

Fernandina Beach has been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last eight contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 10-12 record this season. As for Baker County, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 16-3.

Fernandina Beach has already played their next game (against Wolfson), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Baker County has already played their next matchup, a 52-29 win against Westside on the 3rd.
