Basketball Recap: Yuliana Garcia-Rodriguez's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Clay over Fleming Island

Clay was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their fourth straight loss. They might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 46-11 to the Fleming Island Golden Eagles, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior. While losing is never fun, the Blue Devils can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 537th, while the Golden Eagles are ranked 186th).

Clay lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Yuliana Garcia-Rodriguez, who posted four points and three steals. Garcia-Rodriguez is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last five games she's played.

Fleming Island was led to victory by Seven Gourdet and Gianna Crawford. Gourdet went 6 for 8 en route to 12 points, while Crawford put up seven points along with seven boards and three steals. Another player making a difference was Amira Martin, who had six points and six rebounds.

Clay's defeat dropped their record down to 4-15. As for Fleming Island, they pushed their record up to 14-10 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road.

Both are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. Clay has already played their next game (against Middleburg), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Fleming Island will take on Orange Park on Thursday. Fleming Island is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 50.6 points per game this season.
