Baseball Recap: Vela Drops Season-High Score on Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Vela). They were the clear victor by a 16-2 margin over the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial Wolverines on Monday. The team's explosion at the plate also rewarded the Sabercats with their most commanding win of the season.

June Garza, Jr. looked comfortable as he struck out six batters over 3.2 innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits. That's the fewest earned runs he has allowed over his last three games.

On the hitting side, Matthew Abundiz was a standout: he scored three runs and stole Two bases. while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. What's more, he posted two RBI, the most he's had since back in April of 2024. Mark Moreno was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

Vela always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .643. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial only posted an OBP of .385.

Vela has been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-6 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.3 runs over those games. Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost eight of their last nine contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-10 record this season.

Coincidentally, Vela and Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial will both be playing Pharr-San Juan-Alamo North the next time they take the field. Vela will head out to face Pharr-San Juan-Alamo North at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, while Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial will host them at 7:00 p.m. on March 25th.
