Basketball Recap: Mead Starts Season with Victory Against Windsor

Mead gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Tuesday. They snuck past the Windsor Wizards with a 67-61 win. This was payback for the Mavericks, who suffered a 42-40 defeat the last time these two teams met.

Mead's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Matthew Angelo, who went 9 for 14 on his way to 23 points and eight rebounds. Angelo's evening made it four games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Kyler Crump, who went 6 of 10 on his way to 16 points.

When it comes to explaining why Windsor lost, don't look at Madden Smiley. Despite the final result, he went 8 of 18 en route to 21 points and eight rebounds. Smiley is crushing it when it comes to points: he's scored at least 15 every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was John Backhaus, who went 5 of 12 on his way to 14 points and five boards.

Windsor's loss ended a seven-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 3-1.

Mead didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 69-52 defeat against Highlands Ranch on the 11th. As for Windsor, they will take on Mesa Ridge at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Windsor knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past four games -- so hopefully Mesa Ridge likes a good challenge.
