Baseball Recap: Wesleyan Christian Academy Takes Down Nationally-Ranked Houston County

Wesleyan Christian Academy and Houston County (ranked 18th and 16th in the MaxPreps national rankings respectively) squared off in a high-profile contest on Friday. The Wesleyan Christian Academy Trojans sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 7-6 win over the Houston County Bears. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Trojans have posted since April 25, 2024.

Wesleyan Christian Academy got a great performance from Sam Cozart as he struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits.

On the hitting side, Wesleyan Christian Academy's win was truly a team effort as seven different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Josh Hammond, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI and one double. Another was Nick Papciak, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.

The victory got Wesleyan Christian Academy back to even at 1-1. As for Houston County, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-3 record this season.

Wesleyan Christian Academy didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, a 3-0 defeat against Mountain Brook on the 28th. As for Houston County, they will square off against Presbyterian Christian at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. Houston County's pitching crew has only allowed 2.1 runs per game this season, so Presbyterian Christian's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
