Baseball Recap: Beech Grove Takes a Loss

Beech Grove extended their losing streak to seven on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 4-17 in the process. They came up short against the Speedway Sparkplugs, falling 10-0. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Sparkplugs this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 12-3 on Wednesday.

As for Speedway, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-13-1 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.2 runs over those games.

For Speedway's part, Bradley Howard made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out seven over five innings pitched. Howard also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Speedway is 2-1 when he allows at most two earned runs, but 4-12-1 otherwise. Howard was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with five RBI and one double. Those five RBI gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Keller Socks and Logan Moore did most of the damage at the plate: Socks went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double, while Moore went 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Those two runs gave Socks a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Michael Broida, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with two RBI.

Looking ahead, Beech Grove will be playing at home against Indianapolis Arsenal Technical at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Speedway, they are taking a road trip to take on Park Tudor at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. The Sparkplugs' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Panthers have averaged an impressive 6.1 runs per game this season.
