Baseball Recap: Buckingham Victorious

Buckingham was handed a heart-breaking two-run loss in their last contest, but they sure didn't let that happen against Fork Union Military Academy on Tuesday. The Knights' pitchers stepped up to hand the Blue Devils a 25-0 shutout. Considering the Knights have won five matchups by more than nine runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Ty Wilkerson and Evan Shumaker made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Wilkerson pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Shumaker tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. The dominant performance also gave Wilkerson a new career-high in strikeouts (three). At the plate, Wilkerson went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, while Shumaker went 1-for-2 with one triple, one run, and one RBI. Wilkerson is becoming a predictor of Buckingham's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 3-6 when he doesn't).

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Dawson Edwards, who fired off four runs, two triples, and three RBI while going 4-for-5. Those four hits gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Luke Gilliam, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with six RBI, one triple, and one run.

The victory got Buckingham back to even at 6-6. As for Fork Union Military Academy, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-13.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Buckingham will face off against Randolph-Henry at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The Knights will need to watch out since the Statesmen have now posted at least ten runs in their last three contests. As for Fork Union Military Academy, they will square off against Randolph-Macon Academy at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The Yellow Jackets have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 8.07 runs per game on average), something the Blue Devils will no doubt try to take advantage of.
