Baseball Game Preview: Moffat County Bulldogs vs. Steamboat Springs Sailors

The Moffat County Bulldogs will look to take advantage of their home field for the first time this season as they take on the Steamboat Springs Sailors at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Moffat County came up short against Basalt last Wednesday, falling 12-1. The defeat continues a trend for the Bulldogs in their meetings with the Longhorns: they've now lost six in a row.

Moffat County saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Owen Hill, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with two stolen bases. Those two stolen bases gave Hill a new career-high.

While Steamboat Springs didn't have the best season last year (they finished 6-15), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They walked away with an 11-6 victory over Olathe on Saturday. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Sailors.

The team relied heavily on Jonathan Nicoles, who scored three runs and stole two bases while getting on base in three of his five plate appearances. Those stolen bases marked the first that he snagged this season. Drew Bustamante was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-4.

Steamboat Springs was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .452. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .318 or higher in eight consecutive matches.

Steamboat Springs' win bumped their record up to 6-3. As for Moffat County, their loss dropped their record down to 0-2.

Moffat County couldn't quite finish off Steamboat Springs when the teams last played back in April of 2024 and fell 11-9. Can Moffat County avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
