1. Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach)
Head coach: Chris Scott
2012 finish: 14-1
Team preview

Ocean Lakes has talent all over the field and appears to be the class of Virginia in 2013. It fell just short of a state title in 2012 and is poised to go the distance this fall. Senior defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi is a force on defense. He’ll be backed by linebacker Johvoni Simmons, also a coveted recruit. Running back Brandon Simmons and receiver Jaason Lewis give the offense plenty of firepower.

2. Centreville (Clifton)
Head coach: Chris Haddock
2012 finish: 8-4
Team preview

Following a 1,215-yard, 14-touchdown sophomore season, junior running back A.J. Turner is back for Centreville’s offense. He’s joined by quarterback Scott Walter to form a talented, experienced backfield. Charles Tutt, who had six receiving touchdowns last year, is another weapon. Tyler Love and Chad Wiggins, the team’s two leading tackles in 2012, return to lead the defense. The team returns 18 overall starters.

3. Oscar Smith (Chesapeake)
Head coach: Rich Morgan
2012 finish: 11-2
Team preview

One of the state’s top programs over the last five seasons, Oscar Smith will be in the thick of the Division 6 title hunt this fall. The team’s headliner is five-star recruit Andrew Brown, who transferred from Indian River last summer. The 2015 class features talented running back DeShawn McClease, who could explode as a junior, and defensive end Josh Sweat. Corey Vickers could be the winner in the quarterback competition.

4. Hylton (Woodbridge)
Head coach: Tony Lilly
2012 finish: 11-3
Team preview

Despite losing star linebacker E.J. Levenberry to Florida State, Hylton returns enough talent to compete in 2013. Dual-threat quarterback Travon McMillian is back following a season in which he amassed over 2,400 yards from scrimmage. Terrin Allen-Neal, the team’s leading receiver a year ago, is also back. Keep an eye on sophomore Eric Kumah, who burst onto the seen as a ninth grader a year ago. Brian Roberts leads the defense.

5. Lake Taylor (Norfolk)
Head coach: Hank Sawyer
2012 finish: 15-0; Division 5 state champion
Team preview

Lake Taylor drops to Division 4 after capturing a state title in Division 5, but still remains among the state’s most talented teams. Ohio State-bound defensive end Jalyn Holmes amassed 75 tackles and 12 sacks last year. With Dyquan Harris lining up alongside him, Lake Taylor is stacked on defense. Equally adept at passing and running, quarterback Delmon Williams should build off a fine junior season.
