Basketball Recap: Portsmouth Christian Takes a Loss

After flying high against Brunswick Academy last Monday, Portsmouth Christian came back down to earth. The Patriots took a 63-58 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Catholic Crusaders on Tuesday. If the Patriots were looking for revenge after losing 66-45 to the Crusaders when the teams met back in November of 2015, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Despite the loss, Portsmouth Christian still got an impressive performance from Makhi Cofield, who went 5-for-11 to rack up 17 points. Cofield is also on a roll when it comes to field goal percentage, as he's posted one of at least 45% in the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Jayden Daughtry, who posted six points and nine boards.

Catholic's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Dean Williams led the charge by shooting 4-for-7 from beyond the arc and almost dropping a double-double with 28 points and nine rebounds. What's more, Williams also posted a 57% three-point shooting accuracy, which is the highest he's achieved since back in December of 2024. Tabren Hawkins was another key player, putting up 19 points and six boards.

Portsmouth Christian's loss dropped their record down to 2-2. As for Catholic, their victory was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 5-0.

Portsmouth Christian wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 76-74 win against Washington-Liberty on the 6th. As for Catholic, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 71-54 victory against Bethel Academy Regional on the 4th.
