Baseball Recap: Newark Memorial Continues Home Dominance on Wednesday

Newark Memorial proved they can win big last Friday (they won by 12) and on Wednesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past the James Logan Colts 6-5. This was payback for the Cougars, who suffered a 2-0 loss the last time these two teams met.

Connor Murphy was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He tossed 6.2 innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits. He has been consistent : he hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 1-for-2.

Murphy wasn't the only one making solid contact as six players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Andres Romo, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3. The dominant performance also gave Romo a new career-high in doubles (two). Another was Anthony Medrano, who went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

Newark Memorial was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .312 or higher in three consecutive contests.

Newark Memorial pushed their record up to 10-2 with the win, which was their fifth straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.6 runs on average over those games. As for James Logan, they moved to 7-7 with that defeat, which also ended their five-game winning streak.

Newark Memorial will have a chance to go back-to-back against the Colts: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
