Softball Recap: Columbian Wins Going Away Against Willard

The Columbian Tornadoes got the win against the Willard Crimson Flashes on Tuesday by a conclusive 13-1. With that win, the Tornadoes brought their scoring average up to 6.2 runs per game.

Maizie Mellott made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out nine over five innings pitched. Those nine strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.

In other batting news, Olyvia Steinmetz was a standout: she went 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Those three RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Camryn Haman, who went 2-for-3 with two doubles, one stolen base, and one run.

Columbian always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .529. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

The victory got Columbian back to even at 8-8. As for Willard, they have been struggling recently as they've lost eight of their last nine matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-12 record this season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Columbian will face off against Perkins at 4:45 p.m. on Friday. As for Willard, they will take on Edison at 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday. The Crimson Flashes' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Chargers have averaged an impressive 9.9 runs per game this season.
