Softball Preview: Newman Smith Trojans vs. Lone Star Rangers
Newman Smith is 0-4 against Lone Star since March of 2023 but things could change on Tuesday. The Newman Smith Trojans will be playing at home against the Lone Star Rangers at 6:00 p.m. This will be Newman Smith's first chance to prove their worth in the conference.
Newman Smith is headed into Tuesday's contest looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their 23rd straight game dating back to last season on Friday. They came up short against Grand Prairie, falling 8-2.
Meanwhile, Lone Star got the win against Plano on Friday by a conclusive 13-3. The Rangers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six games by seven runs or more this season.
BellaLucia Cantu was a major factor no matter where she played. She pitched seven innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off five hits. Cantu was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-5 with three RBI. Those three RBI gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Makala Wallace, who scored four runs and stole a base while getting on base in all five of her plate appearances. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March of 2024. Camryn Allen was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-4.
Lone Star was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .500. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Lone Star's victory bumped their record up to 7-4-1. As for Newman Smith, their loss dropped their record down to 0-8.
