Football Game Preview: Jay Mustangs vs. Southside Cardinals

The Jay Mustangs are taking a road trip to square off against the Southside Cardinals at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Jay knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 31 points or more in their past five games -- so hopefully Southside likes a good challenge.

Jay is headed into the matchup after thoroughly thrashing Southwest: they outscored them in every quarter. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that the Mustangs blew the Dragons out of the water with a 35-7 final score. The contest was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point the Mustangs had established a 21-point advantage.

Tajari Wellington had another great game (as he tends to do), throwing for 166 yards and two touchdowns on only nine passes, while also rushing for 30 yards and one score.

Special teams also played a big role in the game for Jay, adding 11 points to the final score. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Jayden Casiano, who ran a punt back for a touchdown.

Meanwhile, Southside had already won two in a row and they went ahead and made it three on Thursday. They came out on top against the Mavericks by a score of 20-7.

Jay's record now sits at 8-1. As for Southside, their record is now 6-3.

Everything came up roses for Jay against Southside in their previous meeting back in November of 2024, as the team secured a 39-10 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mustangs since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
